good work

I liked it, despite all anti-climax

And, I think I recognize the music from Medal of Honor...

no?

SOMNAMBULA responds:

emmm may be =)

So, you like The Mars Volta?

I drove 1,750 miles from San Antonio Texas to San Francisco California in 25-hours road trip ALONE to see them perform this song live in their first ever all acoustic set on NEW YEARS EVE.

I have bragging rights FOREVER

But this animation...

I'll say that the cartoon style was a little toonier than I'll ever be comfortable associating with the volta, and the story was a little like the whole Cerpin Taxt bit, what with the whole re-suicide thing, but I think it was very well done.

The creatures and scenery were wonderfully worked and entertaining. Thanks for putting TMV on the frontpage.

Goodwork and I hope to see more from you.

solidblur responds:

I've recently been informed of the similarities to cerpin taxt (which I never "analyzed") and thought it was an amazing coincidence (I seriously had no idea). I agree with your points, it's kinda cartoony for a TMV video, but I still think it generates a certain feeling of the song. And you sound like a total manic driving that far :) Nicely done.

10/11

Effort is obvious, I know how frustrating it is to get really good looking results with a lot of 3d applications. I can only imagine what a project this must have been for you.

That being said I feel guilty trying to offer any kind of criticism, constructive or otherwise, but if I were to look for any kind of improvement in the next animation, I would say that the 2d special effects could have been more spectacular. The a few of the explosions and gunfire looked pretty bitchin', but the force field destructing and the jet engine flame and smoke trails did sort of visibly contrast the quality of the 3d animations, like it was a little out of context or something. It looked like really developed use of gradient fills, and while it worked with the edgy style of 3d animations, I do think it could been more appealing.

This is really trivial, but the lighting was a little unconvincing for being in the middle of space, like when I think of foto's of astronaughts and spacestations I imagine really extreme lights and darks from light sources in 360 degrees.

The starry background was out of sync for a few of those circling camera angles. And I know it's not an easy thing to coordinate with flash, just work with a little more maybe.

I really like how you did the camera movements and blur effects, it was interesting and well done, especially during the shakey boosting scenes. Maybe a little superfluous and needlessly jumpy maybe once or twice but all together very compelling.

I'm a really big fan of sci-fi and futuristic apocalypses in space and all that jazz and I love your presentation of it all, it was very smooth, I really liked the ideas behind this a lot. The voice acting and recording did sound a little amature, like audio that's recorded on high-consumer end production tools has a recognizable clarity that I think yours lacked. For instance, there was an audible white noise before and after every voice-over, I could see it getting worked it into the whole outerspace dialogue thing, but it didn't sound very intentional.

Again, I really do like the plot the and setting and the intro to this whole story, but I kind of feel like that last scene was a really exaggerated note to end on. I liked it really, like it reminded me of all the fighter pilot games I used to play before they started sucking, it's just that it didn't expand whatsoever to the initial scene with the drops of blood and end of humanity stuff. It was just a little disconnected is all, it makes for choppy storytelling.

The last thing I'll mention is that I think maybe not having any shots of the main character from inside the cockpit or showing him at all disserviced the dramatic effect. It's almost like you didn't show him at all because you couldn't, and it kind of left the speaker a little dissociated, like, for all I know this animation is about a talking spaceship with a bright blue dash.

I'm a tad high right now and don't know if I just wasted a shitload of time typing out of my ass, but I wouldn't have said anything if I didn't think you put a mature effort into it, and I wrote this because I'd really like to see more of this that's even better and more developed.

Good work, 10/11

DutchinLive responds:

Awesome review man, everything you said I had considered beforehand, working on the lighting at the moment for the next one, Swift 3d's lighting effects are pretty standard, nothing like that of maya or 3ds, but I see where you are coming from, no sources in the first episode really existed, so i just used a standard light, which made the ships pretty bright, but contrast was what i needed.

The audible white noise wasn't intentional, I just kinda forgot to remove it, and had it masked with the ambient noise i added, didn't think anyone would notice, but with sub-par voice acting (my bad), it was pretty apparent.

The initial scene won't be expanded on immediately, but the direction of the series may become apparent after a few episodes, trust me, if overall you rated this a 10 based on potential plot, you won't be disappointed.

The main character will be revealed next episode!

Thanks for the great review man!

yeah dude fuck yeah!

This is why I got into flash.

Goodwork

Figter responds:

thanks man

KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

First of all, go fuck yourself for being KK.

Second, that was actually funny man. That was damn funny and I actually thought the kk intro was one of the funnier ones that I had seen.

The only thing that sucks is this is totally going to get washed out in all the other submissions, no one is ever really going to see it. I really wish you had put just a little more work into this one because it really is funny as balls.

So in conclusion, fuck you and have a nice day.

Magyar responds:

I'm sorry it didn't involve sticks.

Good work

The animation was good, especially during the fight.

I gave 7/10 because there's definitely room for improvement, but it was a solid production.

It reminded me of FF6, just because the gang of moogles was cave-dwelling, and the yeti thing was also in some cave later on in the game. I liked how the moogles looked more like people than teddy bears.

Try adding sound effects and experimenting with more believable looking blood.

Your camera work was good and jumpy, no boring shots or angles during the fight.

Keep it up and good work

synsacrum responds:

thanks for the comments and the critque its all really helpful.

and yeah FF6 is still my favorite FF game, thanks in no small part to the fact its the only one where you get to play as Mog/a moogle, but i always hated the yeti thing, so i made them a bad guy.

I liked it.

I actually thought the idea behind this was pretty funny. What would have helped is having a preloader and an applicable thumbnail, or maybe doing something about the 4.7mb file size.

Things like that make it hard to take a flash like this as a good joke instead of a bad joke with good intentions.

I fucking hate the phrase Avant Garde

VespeneGas responds:

Although I believe a preloader would contradict the minimalism, an appropriate thumbnail has been added.

Thank you for your input.

I can't imagine someone feeling good about themselves after making something like that. It's like you took a couple of really bad jokes and animated them.

In all seriousness, I'm not even sure how to approach constructive criticism for this one.

And really, to be completely honest, I am kind of disgusted with the idea of someone trying to make a joke out of the whole Chinese invasion. I don't know anyone from Tibet and I probably never will, but it's still a disturbing premise.

Now what would be funny is if you could replace the Chinese militant and the defenseless monks with, say, a Nazi officer and a gaggle of emaciated Jews, or a KKK hood and some oppressed southern black people. Now that would have been fucking hilarious, eh? Watching the filthy fucks squirm and say comical things while they get torched and shot at, like, "Ah! I'm a black jew and totally deserve this!" That sounds like choice material...

Yeah, make that your next big one. And you have to make it ultra-offensive by using racist terms and showing photos of actual lynchings and torture, otherwise you're a pussy. Just a big meaty hole.

Look, I'm sure you're just some jackass or maybe several jackasses trying to make an impression on the animation subculture with shock value and lame repetitive jokes, but there's a better way. It's called genuine creativity. No, I know it's not easy and requires effort and talent and all sorts of things naturally inherent to people born with a soul, but c'mon, you don't really want to burn out your miserable little existence on this planet peddling tasteless humor to an audience of anonymous fucks just to get your asshole/s figuratively french kissed on a review board, do you?

I wouldn't. You do whatever though.

WeRBopBop responds:

We've received numerous emails thanking us for this flash. The emails we are most impressed with are from people who weren't aware of this situation at all (people your age). This 'situation', regardless of which side you're on is newsworthy and people should at the very least be aware of it. The fact we've made anybody aware of this makes us pretty happy.

We're just excited you spent over an hour on newgrounds writing a review for us, spell checking, grammar... everything looks great!

Thanks for the useless insults though, my asshole has never been figuratively wetter.

don't tell me what to vote

but I liked it. Actually, I thought it was pretty good for a first FBF
